There are actually two aspects of art restoration: conservation and restoration. Art conservation is not identical to art restoration.
Restoration is a process that attempts to return the work of art to some previous original state. For artwork like oil paintings, this may include cleaning and/or repairing damage to the original canvas.
Art conservation, on the other hand, is preserving the existing work, in its current state, for the future and may include examination, documentation, treatment and preventive care.
While typically called “photo restoration,” restoring an old photograph doesn’t usually alter the original. Instead, the photograph is digitally scanned then expertly edited to reproduce the original image less any damage, tears, creases, etc.
Whether conservation or restoration, Forster’s Custom Framing can insure that your precious piece of art is handled with care and professionalism. If you are not sure what is actually necessary, give us a call or drop by for a FREE evaluation.
